Approaching the Approach Road Cabinet Design

approachThis month’s featured product  — the Biltmore ™ Collection Approach Road Cabinet —  is one of my favorite designs.  If you’ve ever visited Biltmore ™, you’ll recall the beautiful drive along the three-mile “Approach Road” that leads to the estate.  Like all of the lovely grounds on the Estate, the road itself was the work of renowned landscape architect Fredrick Law Olmstead, who also designed New York’s Central Park and the U.S. Capitol grounds.  The  curving road is lined with pines, shrubs, bamboo groves and other trees, which all come together to create a sense of anticipation as you approach the spectacular home.

Inspired by the road’s graceful curves, I chose a rounded front for this cabinet and echoed that design with three arches framing the adjustable wood framed glass shelves.  Like all pieces in our line, this cabinet is available in your choice of finish or decorated art options.  The decorated style shown here captures some of the design elements found on a stunning 16th century tapestry  that hangs on a wall at Biltmore.

From these magnificent tapestries and original artwork  by  the old masters  to countless antiques and other antiquities that fill the 250-room home, George and Edith Vanderbilt’s  spectacular Asheville, NC estate has provided a rich source of inspiration for  the many designs in our Biltmore ™ Chateau Reserve Collection.  If you’ve never visited Biltmore or would like to learn more, you can visit their website.
